I'm not sure exactly how the "pointer" thing works, Anthony. I can definitely see this working with the stylus that comes with a Palm type organizer device. I really like the sense of gameplaying in your idea. Turning the assignment into a treasure hunt makes for a more enjoyable, and less "testing" and therefore potentially distressing or stressful experience. The use of colour is also fun, taking advantage of the colour screen. I think colour is an easy-to-see graphic element that would be useful in even poor lighting conditions (i.e. way too much ambient light). I also like the way you've laid out the various steps in the assignment with the iPod screens. This really helps to make your recipe clear. You might even be able to simplify the writing a bit, now that the pix are in place. I like the friendly tone.
